rogram Purpose and Philosophy
The Minis Rugby Program is designed to introduce young children to the foundations of rugby in a safe, playful, and developmentally appropriate environment. The program emphasizes enjoyment, exploration, and confidence-building, ensuring that every child feels welcomed and supported as they take their first steps into the sport.
Age Group and Developmental Focus
This program is tailored for children aged 4 to 8, a stage where motor skills, coordination, and social awareness are rapidly developing. Activities are structured to match the attention span and physical capabilities of this age group, ensuring that learning happens naturally through movement and play.
Foundational Rugby Skills
Children are introduced to the essential building blocks of rugby, including basic ball-handling, safe catching, gentle passing, spatial awareness, and movement with the ball. The focus is not on competition but on helping children understand the game’s simplest concepts while developing comfort with the ball.
Physical Literacy and Motor Skill Development
Sessions incorporate a wide range of physical activities that enhance balance, agility, running technique, hand–eye coordination, and overall body control. These skills form the foundation not only for rugby but for all future sports participation.
Social and Emotional Growth
The Minis Program places strong emphasis on teamwork, sharing, listening, and following instructions. Coaches encourage positive communication and help children build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging within the team environment.
Safety, Coaching Approach, and Supervision
All activities are non-contact and carefully supervised. Coaches use age-appropriate teaching methods, positive reinforcement, and clear demonstrations to ensure children learn safely. The environment is structured to minimize risk while maximizing fun and engagement.
Session Structure and Weekly Routine
Each session follows a predictable and comforting structure:
Warm-up games to activate movement
Skill stations focusing on simple rugby fundamentals
Short, playful challenges to reinforce learning
Mini tag-style games to apply skills in motion
Cool-down and reflection time
Long-Term Player Pathway
The Minis Program prepares children for the next stage of rugby development by building a strong foundation of physical literacy, confidence, and enthusiasm. Graduates of this program transition smoothly into the Youth Development Program with a solid understanding of the sport’s basics.
